Glenwood Lodging

Glenwoodblog was updated with a more comprehensive lodging area recently.  Check out the sample Hotel Colorado listing with photos, maps and links to review sites.  Some video should be next. We are focusing on providing good information about the hotels by linking to many of the websites that review the hotels.

Roaring Fork River near my house

Roaring Fork River in Glenwood Springs:

Glenwood Springs Colorado video of the Roaring Fork River. The video is taken from the Old Cardiff Bridge. Darn, how do I put in a video into a journal?

Three Days in Glenwood Springs Glenwooodsrings

Even though we live in Glenwooodsrings we spent some quality family time in town recently.  The things we recommend the most to do if you are a tourist.

Lodging: We like the lodging that has cabins and is in the mountains typically. Our three favorite places:
  • Glenwood Canyon Resort -Our favorite, on the Colorado River, outside of town, in the Glenwood Canyon, on the Bikepath, with Rafting on-site. We really like their cabins.
  • Four Mile Creek Bed and Breakfast- Has awesome cabins and impressive art and antiques.
  • Mitchell Creek Bed and Breakfast - 5 minutes to the North of town.  New, nice, small.
  • Hotels if you really want to stay closer to downtown inexpensively, or prefer a hotel: 1st Choice, Antlers, Best Value Inns and Suites
Activities

  • Hike to Hanging Lake - about 3-4 hours roundtrip, beautiful lake and waterfalls.
  • Ride the Glenwood Canyon Bikepath
  • Go to the Glenwood Caverns and Adventure Park and take rides, eat, and act like tourists.
  • Visit the Frontier Historical Museum
  • Stop at Roaring Fork Anglers to get the scoop on fly-fishing, then, fish in the Roaring Fork or Colorado River
  • Eat the Bayou Restraurant, (Cajun), Rivers Restaurant and the Glenwood Canyon Brewpub
If you need more ideas, visit the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce

Gunnison River in the Black Canyon Gorge Fly Fishing and Rafting Trip -- 2006

We caught lots of browns (and about 10% rainbows) over three days -- I probably averaged about 10 fish a day during the last three annual trips we took.  This is a photo of a sample canyon -- although there are many types of rock formations, the river runs through a canyon for the first 2 and 1/2 days of the float. It opens up into meadows after that.  Part of the fun is the sheer variety of water you face, and the ever-changing hatches as you work your way down-river and through different hatches and different parts of the day.    We also go in early June, and it is HOT!

Dvorak Expeditions was the company we used, for the third year in row, for our three day flyfishing and rafting trip on the Gunnison River, in the Gunnison Gorge of the Black Canyon. Dvorak Expeditions led a great fly fishing trip, as always - we go in early June during Gunnison's famous Salmon Fly hatch. Each year we have caught that hatch on at least one of out three days of fishing. If the Salmon fly isn't presence there are many of other dry-fly fishing opportunities for Caddie especially, but many other Stone Flies as well.
